PTA Bans the Use of DECT 6.0 Cordless Phones

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), on Tuesday terming the use of Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (Dect) 6.0 cordless phones illegal, announced to step up its efforts to eradicate the sale and use of this device.

Our technical team has found that the strong signals of Dect 6.0, interfere with the signals of mobile phone operators, that’s why we have banned the cordless in the country and sought law enforcing agency’s help in eliminating use of this particular device, said PTA official.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a digital wireless telephone technology, which has made cordless phones much more common in both businesses and homes. In Pakistan also, a large number of consumers are adopting this new technology due to its ease, voice quality and wide coverage area. Cost is another major factor, which has made this device popular; the consumers only pay the cheap cost of fixed line calls, while enjoying mobility and portability of an expensive mobile gadget.

Bill Gates has entered the increasing list of people in computing who are vary of artificial intelligence. In an AMA session on Reddit, the Microsoft chairman wondered whether the machines could grow as powerful one day as to be uncontrollable.

Gates’ sentiments echoed that of Stephen Hawking, who believes the rise of machines can actually end up marking the end of mankind, and Elon Musk among other people.

While Android and iPhone devices are enjoying favorable market dominance, Microsoft continues to struggle with dwindling market share in an era of mobile eruption. Now the software company is making ambitious inroads into overtaking Android devices with its Windows 10 operating system.

It seems Microsoft has been convinced that the way to beat Android is to join it, and so it has managed to please Xiaomi to install Windows 10 in Mi 4 devices that run the Android OS. Well, at the very least it is an optional installation, meaning Microsoft will work with individual Mi 4 users to accomplish its goal.

In a way, Microsoft’s decision to introduce Windows 10 to Android users is a confirmation of the poor market performance of its own devices, from low- to mid-range gadgets that have attracted a scanty portion of the mobile market. Perhaps this time, it will make a dent in Android’s market share, given Xiaomi’s impressively growing user base. The Chinese phone maker has been making headlines lately for its expansion in the mobile tech landscape, inching even close to huge rivals on a global scale.

Partnering with Xiaomi will provide Microsoft a lucrative opportunity to invade Android’s turf, particularly in China, which represents a considerable portion of that market.

While Samsung and others have already announced the high speed next-generation PCIe SSDs, it is Kingston with its HyperX Predator M.2 SSD which will be the first wide-scale commercially available SSD to use this tech. It is still in its nascent stages and as you would expect, isn't cheap.

The new SSD can reach sequential read and write speeds of a mind-boggling 1400 and 1000 Mbps respectively. That still lags Samsung’s solution which stands at 2.2 Gbps though.

Peter Chou is out as CEO of HTC, and chairperson Cher Wang is his replacement. Chou will "transition to a strategic new role leading future product innovation" as head of HTC's Future Development Lab.

Wang co-founded HTC in 1997, and in 2013 Chou handed her more of his CEO responsibilities in what was said to be a temporary move. She will also retain her chairperson position. "As an entrepreneur at heart, I am excited to see so many new opportunities, and I am honoured to accept this opportunity to help shape the next stage of HTC's development," Wang said in a statement.

Mobile phone users in Pakistan were recorded at 132.33 million at the end of January 2014, said stats issues by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Total cellular tele-density reached 77 percent at the end of reported period, the stats said.

All cellular operators, on the whole, added 538,290 subscribers in December 2013 while another 821,339 subscribers were added in January 2014.

Mobilink lead the market with 37.72 million subscribers, followed by Telenor with 33.75 million users. Ufone stood third with its 25.03 million subscribers. Zong had 24.36 million subscribers by January end while Warid settled with 12.82 million subscribers.

During last two reported months, Telenor added 730,193 subscribers on its network to lead the race. Zong added 648,523 subscribers during December 2013 and January 2014.

Ufone added some 25,314 subscribers during reported duration while Mobilink managed to record a net addition of 4,604 subscribers during this time.

Facebook and its popular Pages platform have been a cornerstone of most companies’ social media marketing strategies for years. But if the brands, organizations and celebrities that use Pages want to continue to reach Facebook’s 1.23 billion monthly users in the future, they’re going to have to pay up.

Over the last several months Facebook has been reducing the organic reach of Pages. Even if a person “Likes” a company or organization on the social network, they’re unlikely to naturally see that Page’s content in their News Feed. In a recent study of more than 100 brand pages, Ogilvy & Mather found that companies’ posts dropped from reaching 12 percent of their followers in October to just six percent by February.

Facebook declined to comment on the percentage of fans that see posts from a typical Facebook page (the last publicly disclosed figure was 16 percent in the summer of 2012), but the company admitted in December that posts from Pages are reaching less users. Facebook attributes this change to increased competition as more people and companies join its service. The typical user is inundated with 1,500 posts per day from friends and Pages, and Facebook picks 300 to present in the News Feed. Getting squeezed out are both posts from Pages and meme photos as Facebook shifts its focus to what it deems “high quality” content.

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. first lady Michelle Obama told Chinese professors, students and parents on Sunday that she wouldn't have risen to where she was if her parents hadn't pushed for her to get a good education.

Mrs. Obama made her comments before hosting a discussion about education on the third day of a weeklong visit to the country aimed at promoting educational exchanges between the U.S. and China. She also walked a section of the Great Wall with her two daughters.

"Education is an important focus for me. It's personal, because I wouldn't be where I am today without my parents investing and pushing me to get a good education," the first lady said. "My parents were not educated themselves, but one of the things they understood was that my brother and I needed that foundation."

She said she and her husband wanted as many young people as possible in the United States and the world to have access to education.

She then hosted a roundtable with a handful of Chinese professors, students and parents at an event at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing that was attended by new U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus and closed to the media.

Twitter users in Turkey were blocked from the service Thursday night, just hours after the country’s prime minister, Tayyip Erdogan, said he wanted to “eradicate” it.

The site drew Erdogan’s ire after a number of users in recent weeks posted content such as voice recordings and documents claiming to highlight alleged corruption among some of his close associates. The prime minister has described it as a smear campaign orchestrated by his political opponents.

Twitter users inside the country were blocked from the site from around midnight local time, though workarounds were soon appearing online, one of which came from Twitter itself (below) explaining how users can post tweets using SMS ____ Click to follow this news on Twitter.

In a statement Thursday, the Turkish government said that court orders demanding Twitter remove certain links had been ignored by the San Francisco-based company.

“If Twitter officials insist on not implementing court orders and rules of law….there will be no other option but to prevent access to Twitter to help satisfy our citizens’ grievances,” the statement said.

In a speech to thousands of supporters Thursday ahead of local elections at the end of the month, Prime Minister Erdogan was rather more frank about the situation, calling Twitter “a malice to society,” and saying he wanted to “eradicate” it.

“We will wipe out all of these,” Erdogan said. “The international community can say this, can say that. I don’t care at all. Everyone will see how powerful the Republic of Turkey is.”
